Respite for ME

Do you and your communities know about the Respite for ME program? We all know the importance of supporting policies and programming that help family caregivers. In recognition of this, Maine established a pilot program in 2022, known as Respite for ME, to expand current caregiver supports. Initially, caregivers received a $2000 annual benefit, to be used for an array of services benefitting the caregiver. Examples include caregiver self-care activities, assistive technology, legal consultation, and respite.
As of October 25, 2023, the annual benefit under Respite for ME is increasing from $2,000 to $5,171.   Who is considered a family caregiver? You can read the full description here but it includes a broad range of caregivers, including older adults caring for grandchildren under age 18; older adults caring for adult children with disabilities; and family caregivers of older adults.   How do people find out more? This program is being administered through Maine’s five Areas on Aging and they will help determine eligibility and answer questions about the program. They can also connect people to other available caregivers supports and needed services. If you are a family caregiver, please reach out to your Area Agency on Aging at 1-877-353-3771. This statewide number will connect you to your local Area Agency on Aging.
